The Real Lawnmower Man
“When it comes to cutting the grass in his garden, Stan Hardwick is spoilt for choice with which mower to use. Dubbed the Lawn Ranger, the retired greenkeeper has a staggering collection of 365 – one for every day of the year. Stan, 69, owns rare cutters dating back to the Victorian era and has spent thousands of pounds over the years on his obsession. His long-suffering wife Margaret, 68, has had to put up with the mammoth hoard scattered throughout their Scarborough home. ‘They are all over the house but luckily Margaret is quite tolerant, although she does play up a bit sometimes,’ he said. His passion for gardening gadgets was sparked by his 40-year job as greenkeeper at a golf course. Mr Hardwick said he will never part with them, adding: ‘Some of my mates think I’m mad, but pals I know from greenkeeping are quite interested. ‘I know I’ve got a lot but I would never sell any of them – they’re far too precious.” w/ photos
