The Biggest Oyster In Britain

05/13/09 - Amazing

Weighing in at 3lb, this is the heaviest oyster ever found in British waters. The edible or native oyster is ten times the weight of those usually harvested and measures seven inches across, almost double the average. It was found in a box of mixed fish bought at market in Plymouth on Monday by fishmonger Peter Randall. Because of its size it is believed to be too tough to eat. In addition, Mr Randall, 58, of Mevagissey, Cornwall, thought it would be a shame to kill it so donated it to the Mevagissey Sealife Aquarium – where it is now on public display.” w/ photo
