Man’s Tooth Implanted Into His Eye

July 3, 2009

When Martin Jones met his wife four years ago, he never imagined that one day he would get to see what she looked like. The 42-year-old builder was left blind after an accident at work more than a decade ago. But a remarkable operation – which implants part of his tooth in his eye – has now pierced his world of darkness. The procedure, performed fewer than 50 times before in Britain, uses the segment of tooth as a holder for a new lens grafted from his skin. ‘The doctors took the bandages off and it was like looking through water and then I saw this figure and it was her,’ he said today. ‘She’s wonderful and lovely. It was unbelievable to see her for the first time.” w/ photos

How To Grow Human Limbs

July 3, 2009

Amputees could regenerate limbs and organs thanks to scientists who have come close to discovering how salamanders grow back lost legs. The amphibians seem to form limbs from cells that partly remember how to make bone, muscle, or nerve tissue, researchers have found. But exactly how the Mexican salamanders – called ‘axolotls’ or ‘water monsters’ – do this is still a mystery, according to a report in the journal Nature. ‘How this is achieved in the salamander and why it does not occur in mammals remains an important question,’ Elly Tanaka of the Centre for Regenerative Therapies in Dresden, Germany, and colleagues reported.
‘It gives you more hope for being able to someday regenerate individual tissues in people,’ Malcolm Maden of the University of Florida, who worked on the study, said in a statement. ‘If you can understand how they regenerate, then you ought to be able to understand why mammals don’t regenerate.” w/ photo
