“A plumber whose arm was left twisted grotesquely out of shape in an accident ten months ago has had an operation to correct it ‘cancelled four times’. Torron Eeles, 50, has been left unable to work since falling down the stairs and now fears he may lose his home after being denied incapacity benefit. The father-of-three today hit out at the NHS for the ‘unacceptable delays’, but East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust said Mr Eeles had his operation cancelled on ‘only’ two occasions on clinical safety grounds. His left arm has hung limply by his side since he fractured the humerus bone in December 2008. They flew straight into the path of the Germania airlines flight to Kosovo as it took off from Dusseldorf airport with 80 on board. ‘It was like a scene from the Hitchcock movie The Birds. One second all was clear, and the next thing you saw were these birds swarming over the plane,’ said an onlooker. “Erold Sigurdsson, 65-year-old man from northern Sweden, is once again counting his blessings and picking up the pieces after a truckload of timber slammed into his house on Thursday – for the third time. By now, Sigurdsson is familiar with the loud rumbling and violent shaking that occurs when a load of timber flies off one of the many trucks that round the bend on route 363 in front of his house in Örträsk, just south of Lycksele in north central Sweden. On Thursday, Sigurdsson happened to be in his attic as another timber truck came around the turn, prompting a recognizable sound. “I realized what was happening when things started rumbling and the house started shaking. All the doors were blocked by the logs so I had to wait for help,” Sigurdsson told the local Västerbottens Kuriren newspaper. “It’s happened three times before. “A massive man-eating bird of prey from ancient Maori legend really did exist, according to new research. Scientists have known about the existence of Haast’s eagle for over a century based on excavated bones, but the behaviour of these giant birds was not clear. As the eagles weighed up to 40 lbs some scientists presumed they were scavengers rather than the predators from mythology. But a new study has revealed the eagle as a fearsome predator that probably swooped on flightless birds and even children from a high mountain perch. Researchers Paul Scofield of the Canterbury Museum in New Zealand and Ken Ashwell of the University of New South Wales used computerised CT and CAT scans to reconstruct the size of the brain, eyes, ears and spinal cord of this ancient eagle. This data was compared to values from modern predatory and scavenging birds to determine the habits of the extinct eagle. Professor Scofield said the findings are similar to what he found in Maori folk tales. ‘The science supports Maori mythology of the legendary pouakai or hokioi, a huge bird that could swoop down on people in the mountains and was capable of killing a small child,’ he said.” w/ photos
