Saying It With Solar

11/11/09 - Pretty Cool

Solar is already a source of power. Now some hope solar projects’ striking appearance can also make them a powerful marketing tool. For the Fourth of July, concentrating solar-thermal startup eSolar programmed a quarter square mile of mirrors in Lancaster, Calif., to form the American flag and the Statue of Liberty. The point? To celebrate Independence Day, and to help lobby for the American Clean Energy and Security Act, also known as the Waxman-Markey bill, which would enact a carbon cap-and-trade program and other emission-reduction measures if approved and signed into law. The House of Representatives passed the controversial bill last month, and the Senate is now considering it. This isn’t the first time eSolar has used its solar farm as a huge display tool. The company programmed its mirrors to wish its founder, Bill Gross, a happy birthday last year.” w/ photos

Hidden Diamond Engagement Ring

11/11/09 - Pretty Cool

“After making a few simple wedding bands for friends over the years, I felt compelled to make something extra special for my now wife. Her request was for a simple band without any stones. With that in mind, I spent many months brainstorming and experimenting with designs in CAD, trying to create something unique while staying in bounds of what she wanted. Great effort was taken to make the ring appear seamless and unobtrusive. It’s no bigger than an average size 4 1/2 band. I decided on some dimensional limits and forced myself to stay within them. Some of the special cutting tools I used to make it are nearly the diameter of a human hair. With a gentle yet firm outward pull from both sides, the ring opens to reveal the diamond. With light pressure from both sides, it shuts with a positive and audible click. When closed the ring feels solid and secure.” w/ photos

Off-Road Car Concept

11/10/09 - Pretty Cool

Could this concept car be a glimpse into the future of high-speed, off-road rally racing? Designer Klaud Wasiak thinks so, and has created the Hussar Dakar Rally Concept to show just how far these vehicles can go. The Hassar Dakar is inspired by Polish winged cavalry uniforms of the 18th century, giving this vehicle a dramatic rear wing structure that has both aesthetic and functional qualities. Inside, the driver is seated at a central position, with a lower, tiered section with two seats for a navigator and engineer. That engineer maintains and controls the non-driven parts of the vehicle, including those wings which provide aerodynamic boosts as well as kinetic energy generation from movement.” w/ photos

Super Aviator Sub

She glides silently through the cobalt water, banking gently to the left so smoothly the movement is barely discernible. Seconds later, with pinpoint precision, we swoop down to chase a school of fish confused at the sight of this strange new creature of the deep. My cockpit headset crackles into life: ‘Now, brace yourself for the porpoise,’ says Captain Alfred McLaren, the excitement palpable in his voice. As the joystick is thrust backwards sharply, the world’s first underwater ‘flying’ machine shoots upwards, breaching the water surface nose-first, before splashing back down and descending once more to the depths. The Super Aviator, a revolutionary submersible, could be considered the ultimate boy’s toy. Sleek and oozing more sex appeal than your average fighter jet, the 22ft long futuristic sub has already seduced billionaires such as Roman Abramovich and Richard Branson.” w/ photos
