Hawaiian Turtles Surf The Waves

“He has eaten a big lunch and had a snooze on the beach. So this turtle is looking for a nice quiet journey home. Rather than be crashed about on the breakers as he makes his way back out to sea, he ducks down to the sand for a smoother ride. The Hawaiian green sea turtle makes the same journey every day to and from the Laniakea Beach in Hawaii, where he munches on seaweed and takes his rest. He and his friends have been caught on camera by surf photographer Clark Little. Mr Little, 40, took the pictures this summer while shooting waves from below sea-level. He said: ‘The turtles often travel through the breaking waves. I usually run into them after they have been eating. What they try and do is swim under the wave, to avoid a thrashing.” w/ photos

Chinese Man Invents Stair-Climbing Wheelchair

11/13/09 - Pretty Cool

A Chinese pensioner sold his apartment to fund his dream of creating a wheelchair that can climb stairs… So, despite a complete lack of mechanical knowledge, Li sold his apartment for $65,000 to fund the project. “I bought a lot of books, and used half a year to learn the computer designing, and then another half a year to design the wheelchair,” he said. With one charge, his foldable electric wheelchair can climb nearly 3,000 steps – the equivalent of 50 floors, he claims. The prototype requires somebody to use minimal force to help manouevre it but Li says the next version will be able to climb stairs unaided.” w/ photo

A Flock Of Giant Manta Rays

11/12/09 - Pretty Cool

Gliding through the oceans like ghosts, these mysterious manta rays have been captured in unique footage filmed off the coast of Mozambique. Biologist Andrea Marshall is shown performing a ballet-like dance with the inquisitive giant fish, which she described as ‘the most beautiful underwater birds.’ The experienced diver has been based in the coastal African country since 2003. She spent last year swimming with the black-winged creatures alongside a film crew for a BBC documentary. Until recently it was thought there was only one species of manta ray, but Dr Marshall realised many of the rays – that can grow up to 23ft long – displayed different markings and behaviour. These ocean-faring rays did not stick to the shallow reefs like the others, but migrated 700miles to the Maldives, which is the longest migration known for a fish in the Indian ocean. The mantas were tracked by the team using a GPS system, which revealed they made their epic voyage in just 60 days.” w/ photos

Dogs Welcoming Home Soldiers

“I can’t begin to imagine how hard it would be to leave my family for months at a time, especially if my destination were Iraq or Afghanistan. And I don’t know how I could deal with my wife being deployed overseas. These reunion videos—for me, at least—shed a tiny beam of light on how emotionally draining being a military family can be. They’ll also make you want a dog.” w/ videos

Saying It With Solar

11/11/09 - Pretty Cool

Solar is already a source of power. Now some hope solar projects’ striking appearance can also make them a powerful marketing tool. For the Fourth of July, concentrating solar-thermal startup eSolar programmed a quarter square mile of mirrors in Lancaster, Calif., to form the American flag and the Statue of Liberty. The point? To celebrate Independence Day, and to help lobby for the American Clean Energy and Security Act, also known as the Waxman-Markey bill, which would enact a carbon cap-and-trade program and other emission-reduction measures if approved and signed into law. The House of Representatives passed the controversial bill last month, and the Senate is now considering it. This isn’t the first time eSolar has used its solar farm as a huge display tool. The company programmed its mirrors to wish its founder, Bill Gross, a happy birthday last year.” w/ photos

Hidden Diamond Engagement Ring

“After making a few simple wedding bands for friends over the years, I felt compelled to make something extra special for my now wife. Her request was for a simple band without any stones. With that in mind, I spent many months brainstorming and experimenting with designs in CAD, trying to create something unique while staying in bounds of what she wanted. Great effort was taken to make the ring appear seamless and unobtrusive. It’s no bigger than an average size 4 1/2 band. I decided on some dimensional limits and forced myself to stay within them. Some of the special cutting tools I used to make it are nearly the diameter of a human hair. With a gentle yet firm outward pull from both sides, the ring opens to reveal the diamond. With light pressure from both sides, it shuts with a positive and audible click. When closed the ring feels solid and secure.” w/ photos
