Paralyzed Dog Walks Again

10/08/09 - Amazing

“A paralysed dog has been put back on his feet again, raising hopes of a treatment for humans with severe spinal injuries. Henry the miniature dachshund was unable to walk after discs ruptured in his spine last November. In a pioneering treatment, scientists at Cambridge University took cells from his nose and injected them into his spine. These cells are used because they aid the growth of new nerve fibres. Now the six-year-old dog is walking and wagging his tail again. Scientists originally found the treatment worked on rats. Professor Nick Jeffery and Professor Robin Franklin, who are running the trial, then decided to try the procedure on dogs because spinal injuries are common in many breeds. Henry has also received physiotherapy and is monitored on a treadmill. Dr Jeffrey said: ‘We hope if the results are positive in a few years time the treatment could perhaps be used to help people.” w/ photos

The Beauty Of Antelope Canyon

10/04/09 - Amazing

The Navajo call it ‘the place where water runs through rocks’ and that is literally true. One of the most unearthly places on the planet, take a look at the astounding Antelope Canyon. The peculiar formation of a slot canyon can make for an eerie experience and certainly the Antelope Canyon, on the lands of the LeChee people of the Navajo Nation is one of the stranger places you might choose to visit if your budget doesn’t quite run to a space shuttle. The shuttle, though, never lands on alien planets – you can get the experience for very little here on the third rock from the sun. And it is the sun that makes this canyon extra special.” w/ photos

Bluehenge Unearthed

10/03/09 - Amazing

Archaeologists have discovered Stonehenge’s little sister – just a mile from the famous monument. The prehistoric circle, unearthed in secret over the summer, is one of the most important prehistoric finds in decades. Researchers have called it ‘Bluehenge’ after the colour of the 27 giant Welsh stones it once incorporated – but are now missing. The find is already challenging conventional wisdom about how Stonehenge was built – and what it was used for. Bluehenge was put up 5,000 years ago – around the same time as work began on Stonehenge – and appears to have been a miniature version of it. The two circles stood together for hundreds of years before Bluehenge was dismantled. Researchers believe its stones were used to enlarge Stonehenge during one of a number of redevelopments. Professor Tim Darvill, Stonehenge expert at Bournemouth University, said: ‘This adds to the richness of the story of Stonehenge.” w/ photos

The 10ft Eel

10/02/09 - Amazing

We have all heard how Jesus fed the five thousand with a single fish and just three loaves of bread. Well this incredible 10ft conger eel makes the biblical miracle seem much more possible. Caught off the British coast, the huge fish weighs a hefty 100lb (45kg) and is nearly twice as long as its new owner Matt Endacott. And the fishmonger is offering to sell the entire eel for a giant supper until Saturday. Fishmonger Matt bought the giant eel at market because it was the biggest he’d ever seen. The average conger eel weighs just 5kg and is around 3ft. This outstanding example was caught by sea fisherman Dean Corbett of Torquay, Devon, who sold it to Matt for $50. Matt, of Jackson Ltd, Newton Abbot, Devon, is now asking if anyone will buy the giant eel whole before he cuts it into pieces. He said: ‘It is the biggest one I have ever seen. ‘We had one a few years ago that was 8ft, but this is 10ft.” w/ photos

Despite washout weather in July and August, Gordon, 70, has watched in amazement as the sunflower has continued to grow… and grow. The plant now boasts a staggering 104 separate heads.” w/ photos

500-Carat Diamond

09/30/09 - Amazing

One of the biggest diamonds ever found has been discovered at a mine in South Africa. The rough 507-carat white stone was unearthed at the historic Cullinan mine – where the famous Cullinan diamond, the largest in the world, was discovered in 1905. A spokesman for mining firm Petra Diamond said the gemstone found last week was among the world’s 20 largest diamonds ever discovered. He added: ‘Initial examinations indicate that it is of exceptional colour and clarity, and most likely to be a Type I diamond. ‘At 507 carats (just over 100 grams) the diamond, which has yet to be named, is considered to be amongst the top 20 largest high quality rough diamonds ever found worldwide. It ranks alongside other illustrious diamonds recovered at the celebrated Cullinan mine.” w/ photos

New World’s Tallest Horse

09/29/09 - Amazing

He’s ten feet tall with his head upright, weighs 3,000lb, and stands at 20.2 hands at the shoulder. So is Poe the Clydesdale the world’s tallest horse? His diminutive owner Shereen Thompson thinks so – and said she wants to ‘get the Guinness guys here as soon as possible’. Poe stands 6ft 10in (80.2in) from hoof to shoulder. That is taller than the current tallest horse Remington, who was declared the official Guinness World Record holder only last week at 80in in Princeton, Texas. Living on Ms Thompson’s working farm in Tupperville, Ontario, ten-year-old Poe stands ready to inch above his rivals. ‘We want to get the Guinness guys here as soon as possible,’ said Ms Thompson – who is dwarfed by her gentle giant, who towers over her 5ft 3in, 120lb frame.” w/ photos
