World’s Tallest Cat

“Towering above her feline friends this majestic F1 Savannah cat is a new world record holder. Scarlett’s Magic, who stands at 17.1 inches from shoulder to toe, holds the Guinness world record for the tallest domesticated cat. With her beige coat and dramatic auburn and black spots, 18-month old Scarlett’s Magic is also awaiting the result of a second nomination as the longest (tip of the nose to tip of the tail) domestic cat.” w/ photos
World’s Largest Mass Wedding

“The bride definitely wore white as 20,000 couples took part in the largest mass wedding in a decade in dozens of cities around the world. The ‘blessing ceremony’, held by the Unification Church, was its largest for 10 years and could be the last at such a large scale officiated by 89-year-old Reverend Sun Myung Moon, the controversial founder of the church. More than 20,000 people crammed into the Sun Moon University campus in Asan, south of Seoul, for the main event this morning, with another 20,000 joining simultaneous ceremonies in the U.S. Brazil and Venezuela.” w/ photos
50 Jobs In 50 States In 50 Weeks

“Californian Dan Seddiqui went from being homeless and unemployed to getting 50 different jobs in 50 different US states in just 50 weeks. The former financial analyst found himself with a $150,000 debt from completing a degree in economics. Unable to get a job and without a roof over his head a Mr Seddiqui was even sent to therapy by his parents to help him get a job. But one day Dan decided he would prove that there were jobs out there and he was going to try as many as possible in just one year. In just 50 weeks Dan tried everything from being a lobster catcher, a jazz conductor, a TV weatherman and even a Las Vegas wedding planner. Now he is set to write a book about his amazing journey which has had publishers clamoring for the rights.” w/ photos
Wild Stallions Fight Over Territory

“It looks like a scene from the Wild West. But these majestic stallions are sparring in the heart of the English countryside. The two wild koniks, close relatives of the prehistoric breeds that roamed Europe in the Bronze Age, were captured on camera as they duelled on the wetlands of Wicken Fen in Cambridgeshire. They reared up and boxed with their forelegs in the kind of macho display long absent from these isles. Wild horses vanished from Britain 4,000 years ago. ‘It is a pretty amazing sight to see two stallions fighting like this in England and it sets the heart racing,’ said Carol Laidlow, conservation grazing warden at the 325-acre nature reserve.” w/ photos
Satanic Leaf-Tailed Gecko

“To the less discerning eye, it could be a leaf shrivelling up on a tree fighting the onset of the first autumn chill. But this amazing form is in fact a lizard which can camouflage itself so well that it actually looks like a leaf. Perched on a branch, this Satanic leaf-tailed gecko has blended itself into its surroundings so expertly that even making out its coil-shaped body among the foliage is no mean feat. Its curvy body – at the top of the image – is only a slightly lighter hue of brown than the dark leaf it has tangled itself around. As your eyes move across to the right of the picture, you can just about see its torso making a single corkscrew movement as its darker brown tail tapers off to the right. To the left of the picture, the gecko’s head can be seen as well as its left arm and left leg which squats. The stunning image of the species was captured at the Andasibe-Mantadia National Park in Madagascar.” w/ photos
World’s Smartest Little Boy

“While other two-year-olds are discovering the joy of playgrounds, Oscar Wrigley would rather be learning about wildlife or the history of Ancient Rome. He has recently taken to conducting classical music as he listens in the back of the car and identifies the different instruments. So his parents were not surprised when, at the ripe old age of two years, five months and 11 days, he became the youngest boy in Britain to be accepted by Mensa. With an IQ of at least 160, he has the same score as the likes of Einstein and Stephen Hawking.” w/ photos
Beluga Whales Blowing Water Rings

“First, it puffs out a huge gust of air from its blow-hole to make a doughnut-shaped ring, then it rolls underneath the bubble, kisses it with the tip of its nose and glides over it. It’s like an elegant underwater dance. The Beluga is one of three living in Shimane Aquarium in Japan. Their playfulness makes them popular with visitors – of the 10,000 creatures in this aquarium, the whales are among the biggest attractions. And no wonder: at their shows, the trio dance, nod their heads in unison, catch a ball in their mouths and jump through hoops. They can even blow bubbles at the same time. To accomplish all these feats, it helps that Belugas can tilt their heads up and down and side to side at right angles – just like humans. And while they chug through the water at a sluggish 2 to 5mph, their mental power more than makes up for their slowness. Scientists don’t really know why Belugas – like their fellow marine mammals, the dolphins – are fond of blowing bubbles and then chasing them. But it’s likely that, just like children, they simply enjoy messing about.” w/ photos
World’s Smartest Horse

“Clever Hans was a horse that was claimed to have been able to perform arithmetic and other intellectual tasks. After formal investigation in 1907, psychologist Oskar Pfungst demonstrated that the horse was not actually performing these mental tasks, but was watching the reaction of his human observers. Pfungst discovered this artifact in the research methodology, wherein the horse was responding directly to involuntary cues in the body language of the human trainer, who had the faculties to solve each problem. The trainer was entirely unaware that he was providing such cues. In honour of Pfungst’s study, the anomalous artifact has since been referred to as the Clever Hans effect and has continued to be important knowledge in the observer-expectancy effect and later studies in animal cognition.” w/ photos
