Obnoxious Groundhog
“He’s like the dramatic chipmunk that you don’t want to hang out with.”
Dog Almost Dies After Eating Homer

“D’oh! A dog was taken ill after swallowing a plastic Homer Simpson toy. The figurine was inside a chocolate egg eaten by ten-year-old Dixie, a Dalmatian collie living in Aberdeen. The dog needed emergency surgery to remove Homer from her intestine, after surprised vets had realised what was wrong.” w/ photo
The Beggar Robot
“The Beggar Robot has access to areas normally off-limits to beggars, such as shopping malls and community events, where the richer members of society more often frequent. The hypothesis is that this part of society is only able to show some sympathy towards the marginalized if they communicate from a safe distance and via a technological interface. The project tests and exploits the advantages of robotic interface by bringing the Beggar Robot to public spaces in different countries and adapting it to the local context and local language, to beg in the name of the poor.”
Jack The Ripper Was A Hoax

“Jack the Ripper was a forgery invented by journalists to link a series of unrelated murders and sell newspapers, according to a new book. The unsolved murders of five prostitutes in London’s East End in 1888 have spawned innumerable theories over the identity of the ‘real’ Jack the Ripper – with candidates including artist Walter Sickert, Alice In Wonderland author Lewis Carroll and even Queen Victoria’s grandson the Duke of Clarence. But now historian Dr Andrew Cook claims to have blown all these theories out of the water by dismissing the notion of a brutal, murderous spree by one ’serial killer’ altogether. In his book Jack The Ripper: Case Closed, he argues that the famous letter bragging about the killings – signed ‘Jack the Ripper’ in the first-ever use of that name – was actually forged by journalists desperate to sell their newspaper.” w/ photos
Parrots Have Rhythm

“Footage revealed that some parrots have a near-perfect sense of rhythm; swaying their bodies, bobbing their heads and tapping their feet in time to a beat. Previously, it was thought that only humans had the ability to groove. The researchers believe the findings could help shed light on how our relationship with music and the capacity to dance came about… The scientists believe that the parrots’ apparent capacity for dance may be linked to another talent that they share with humans – the ability for vocal learning and vocal imitation. They believe the part of the brain that evolved to allow us and a handful of other species, including dolphins, songbirds, elephants and some cetaceans, to learn and mimic different sounds may also be responsible for the ability to move in time to music.” w/ photos + videos
Stretched Politician

“Most of us eventually accept the shape we’ve been born into. Hours at the gym, braces and make-up might help us make the best of what we have but that’s about as far as it goes. Hajnal Ban was a little more determined, however. Fearing that being just 5ft 1in would count against her in her legal and political career, the Australian decided to grow another three inches. So she saved up $25,000, flew to a clinic in Russia and had her legs broken in four places. Doctors inserted stainless-steel pins in the bones, fixing them to metal frames around the legs and rotating the screws each day, to stretch the bones apart. ‘At least nine months of that was excruciatingly painful,’ said Israeli-born Miss Ban.” w/ photo
